## History

Sachkhere Municipality occupies the north-eastern corner of the **Imereti** region in western Georgia, with the town of **Sachkhere** as its administrative centre, at about 500 m above sea level. Covering about **973 km²**, it is a land of medium and low mountains in the upper and middle basins of the **Kvirila** and **Dzirula** rivers, with tributaries such as the Jruchula, Chikhura and Shusha. Sachkhere borders Oni and Ambrolauri to the north, Java and Kareli to the east, Khashuri and Kharagauli to the south, and Chiatura to the west.

The area has been settled since the **Bronze Age**: burial mounds and ancient settlements have been found here, and some kurgans were excavated as early as **1910** by the historian **Ekvtime Takaishvili**. From the late 15th century much of the land belonged to the noble **Tsereteli** family, whose power centre was in Sachkhere. In the 18th century the geographer Vakhushti Batonishvili described Sachkhere as a settlement and trading place.

The symbol of the town is **Modinakhe fortress**, rising on a rock above Sachkhere. It served as a residence of the Tseretelis, was captured by the Russian army in **1810**, and was damaged in the **1991 Racha earthquake**; its name is traditionally explained as “come and see”. The Sachkhere district was formed as a separate administrative unit in **1939**. Notable people from the area include the microbiologist **George Eliava** and the Olympic weightlifting champions **Giorgi Asanidze** and **Lasha Talakhadze**.

The municipality is rich in heritage: according to Georgia Travel, it has 127 cultural monuments, 27 of them of national significance. Highlights include **Jruchi Monastery** in Tskhomareti, founded in the 10th–11th centuries and famous for the **Jruchi Gospels** (936); the **Church of St George in Savane** (1046); and the 11th-century churches of **Koreti** and **Speti**. In the village of **Skhvitori** stands the house-museum of the poet **Akaki Tsereteli**.

For travellers, Sachkhere combines mountain scenery with history. A visit to Modinakhe and the town centre can be paired with Jruchi Monastery, the Tsereteli estate at Skhvitori and drives through the green valleys of the Kvirila and its tributaries. The region is also known for Imeretian cuisine and wines from **Tsolikouri**, **Tsitska** and **Dzelshavi** grapes, and it is a natural link between Imereti, Racha and Shida Kartli.
