## The name: Shermadin

In an article published on 27 February 2020, Tbilisi Post wrote that naming the unnamed streets of the new Didi Dighomi settlement after characters from *The Knight in the Panther’s Skin* caused much discussion at the time. Shermadini Street is on the list of such streets given in the article, together with Rostevani, Tinatini, Avtandili, Tarieli, Nestan-Darejani, Asmati, Davari and others. We could not find the official naming decision or its date in the Legislative Herald of Georgia.

In the list of the poem’s characters, Georgian Wikipedia describes Shermadin as **Avtandil’s loyal servant**. According to Russian Wikipedia, Shermadin is the servant of Avtandil who managed his master’s estate while he was away. Avtandil is the commander of the army of Arabia and the beloved of Tinatin, daughter of King Rostevan.

Russian Wikipedia also notes that the names of the poem’s main characters — among them Nestan-Darejan, Tinatin, Asmat, Tariel, Avtandil, Fridon and Shermadin — became common and popular names in Georgia.

## Nearby places
