Overview

Marat Nozadze Street (Georgian: მარატ ნოზაძის ქუჩა) is a street in the north of Tbilisi, in the Gldani district. OpenStreetMap (OSM) address data places it in Mukhiani and the central Gldani microdistricts. It links Aleksi Gobronidze Street with Nodar Dumbadze Avenue.

According to OSM, the street is about 1.7 km long. It is mapped as a tertiary road and has four lanes in parts. We could not find the official naming document in the Legislative Herald of Georgia, so the date of naming and the identity of the namesake are not confirmed by a document.

Location

According to OSM, the western end of the street is at Aleksi Gobronidze Street (about 41.7910° N, 44.8180° E). Here a short section is split into two one-way carriageways. In the east the street ends at Nodar Dumbadze Avenue (about 41.7863° N, 44.8362° E). The approximate midpoint is at 41.7903° N, 44.8250° E.

Along the way, Fore Mosulishvili, Leo Kereselidze, Ioseb Noneshvili and Gamarjveba Streets join it.

According to Georgian Wikipedia, it is the terminus of Line 1 of the Tbilisi Metro (formerly called Gldani) and opened on 7 January 1989.

The name

The street name refers to a person, Marat Nozadze. Since we could not find the naming decision, we cannot confirm whom the street was named after.

A square in the same area also bears Marat Nozadze’s name. According to 2018 reports by Georgian Public Broadcaster (1TV) and droa.ge, a square in Mukhiani is named after Marat Nozadze, a hero who died during the 2008 war. In 2018 the square was renovated: an area of 1,200 m² received new infrastructure and greenery, and a memorial to Marat Nozadze was built. The reports do not give the square’s exact address, nor do they say whether the street is named after the same person.

OSM also shows other Tbilisi streets with the surname Nozadze — Viktor Nozadze Street (Patara Dighomi) and Mamuka Nozadze Street (Nadzaladevi). These are different streets.

Mukhiani

According to Georgian Wikipedia, Mukhiani is a neighbourhood in the Gldani district. The area was once covered with oak trees (mukha), which gave it its name. In the 1970s the forest was cleared and development began. From the 1980s apartment blocks and new microdistricts were built here, and the N. Dumbadze, I. Noneshvili and A. Gobronidze avenues were laid out — the same streets that Marat Nozadze Street connects to.
