Name
The street’s name comes from the Georgian word gutani (გუთანი, genitive გუთნის), meaning “plough”; OSM records this farm implement as the etymology of the street’s name. No official document stating when the street was named could be found (a search on matsne.gov.ge returned no results). In national romanisation of the nominative, the name is written Gutani Street; OSM writes the side lanes as “Gutni”.
A plough is an agricultural implement for primary tillage — ploughing, that is, turning over and loosening the soil. According to Georgian Wikipedia, the plough has been known since ancient times: primitive ploughs are depicted in Egyptian and Babylonian art, and images of ploughs from the 2nd millennium BC survive on rocks in northern Italy and southern Sweden.
