Overview

Achabeti Street (Georgian: აჩაბეთის ქუჩა) is a street in the Isani district of Tbilisi, in Vazisubani. According to OpenStreetMap (OSM), it is about 530 m long. The street starts in the east, at the junction of Simon and Tina Qaukhchishvili Street and Temur Kevkhishvili Street, and runs west.

The street has two side lanes — Achabeti 1st Lane and Achabeti 2nd Lane. In OSM the western part of the street (about 310 m) and both lanes are tagged as unpaved; no surface is given for the eastern part.

Location

According to OSM, the eastern end of the street is at about 41.7055° N, 44.8433° E. From there it runs south-west and then west, ending at about 41.7053° N, 44.8384° E. The midpoint of the street is at about 41.7053° N, 44.8410° E.

From east to west, the street is joined by:

  • Simon and Tina Qaukhchishvili Street and Temur Kevkhishvili Street (eastern end);

  • Achabeti 2nd Lane — on the south side; about 270 m long, it runs south-west;

  • several unnamed residential streets and access roads (as mapped in OSM).

Temur Kevkhishvili Street got its name by Decision No. 80 of the Tbilisi City Council of 21 February 2023, which named an unnamed street next to Simon and Tina Qaukhchishvili Street, together with an adjoining dead end, after the choirmaster Temur Kevkhishvili.

There is no metro station close to the street. The nearest one, Isani, is about 2.0 km away in a straight line.

Name

We could not find the official decision giving the street its name in the Legislative Herald of Georgia (Matsne), so the date and reason for the naming are not confirmed by sources.

Achabeti is a historical place name. According to the Georgian Wikipedia article based on the Georgian Soviet Encyclopedia (vol. 2, 1977), Achabeti is an old village and fortress on the right bank of the Liakhvi River; the present-day villages are Zemo Achabeti and Kvemo Achabeti. The 7th-century Armenian Geography lists the “Achabeti gorge” among the districts of Kartli, and in 1744 Prince Erekle (later King Erekle II) defeated Givi Amilakhvari and his allied Ottoman troops near Achabeti. A 2008 decree of the Government of Georgia lists Zemo and Kvemo Achabeti among the villages of the Didi Liakhvi valley. These villages are in the Tskhinvali region — occupied territory under the Law of Georgia on Occupied Territories. The sources do not state that the street is named after this village.
