Vasil Petriashvili Street (Georgian: ვასილ პეტრიაშვილის ქუჩა) is a street in Vera, in the Mtatsminda district of Tbilisi. According to OpenStreetMap (OSM), it is about 610 m long. It runs from north to south, from Petre Melikishvili Avenue across Iakob Gogebashvili Street.

The street is named after the Georgian chemist and rector of Odessa University Vasil Petriashvili (1845–1908), as a memorial plaque on the street states.

Location

According to OSM, the northern end of the street is at the junction of Petre Melikishvili Avenue and Iakob Nikoladze Street (about 41.7086° N, 44.7813° E), and the southern end about 100 m beyond Iakob Gogebashvili Street (about 41.7035° N, 44.7796° E). The midpoint of the street is at about 41.7061° N, 44.7798° E.

From north to south, the following join or cross it: Akaki Khorava Street (at about 180 m), Vasil Petriashvili Lane (at about 220 m; the lane is about 115 m long), Vasil Barnovi Street (at about 320 m), Larsi Street (at about 390 m) and Iakob Gogebashvili and Tergi Streets (at about 510 m).

OSM maps the northern and middle parts as a single-lane one-way street running away from Barnovi Street in both directions: northwards towards Melikishvili Avenue and southwards towards Gogebashvili Street. The short final section south of Gogebashvili Street is mapped as a residential street.

The nearest metro station is Rustaveli, about 870 m in a straight line from the middle of the street.

Name

According to OSM data, a stone memorial plaque in the northern part of the street states that it bears the name of the eminent Georgian chemist, scientist and public figure, rector of Odessa University in 1907–1908, Professor Vasil Moses dze Petriashvili (1845–1908).

The street has been mapped in OSM as "V. Petriashvili Str." since 2010. We could not find a naming decision or the street's earlier name in a reliable source.

Vasil Petriashvili

According to Wikipedia (Georgian and Russian), Vasil Petriashvili was born in the village of Tsalaskuri (now in Gardabani municipality) and died in 1908 in Carlsbad (now Karlovy Vary).

• He graduated from the Tbilisi Theological Academy in 1865 and from the Novorossiysk (Odessa) University in 1870, where he then worked at the department of technical chemistry.

• He became a professor in 1879 and dean in 1905, and in 1907 he was elected rector of the Novorossiysk University.

• He worked in organic and physical chemistry and in the chemistry of wine; he wrote a textbook on wine production in Georgian.

• He is buried in Tbilisi, at the Vake Cemetery.
