The name

According to Georgian Wikipedia, the pomegranate is a shrub or small tree (up to 5 m) of the pomegranate family. In Georgia it grows wild along the Iori, Alazani and Mtkvari rivers and in some parts of western Georgia. The fruit is eaten fresh, and its juice is used to make syrups and drinks. Why the street was given this name is not documented.

Vashlijvari

According to Georgian Wikipedia (citing the encyclopedias Tbilisi, 2002, and Sakartvelo), Vashlijvari is a neighbourhood and former village in the western part of Tbilisi. It lies on the right side of the Mtkvari valley, on the right bank of the Dighmistskali river, mostly around the slopes of Mount Onadiri.

Vineyards were planted here in the 19th century. In the Soviet period a viticulture and winemaking research institute with an experimental farm was set up here. In 1989 a new high-rise residential district for about 39,000 people was laid out in Vashlijvari. Under the 2014 administrative division, Vashlijvari and Dighomi form a single neighbourhood (No. 9).
