Evgeni Afkhazava Street (Georgian: ევგენი აფხაზავას ქუჩა; also romanised Apkhazava) is a street in the Samgori district of Tbilisi, in Lilo, on the eastern edge of the city. According to OpenStreetMap (OSM), it is about 2 km long. It runs south from David Kobakhidze Street and ends at field tracks on the south-eastern edge of the city.

The street has six lanes — Evgeni Afkhazava 1st to 6th Lanes. It is named after Evgeni Afkhazava (d. 1918), a Georgian officer who fought in World War I.

Evgeni Afkhazava

According to Georgian Wikipedia, Evgeni Solomonis dze Afkhazava was born in the village of Archeuli (now Lanchkhuti Municipality); his date of birth is unknown. He graduated from a military school in 1915. In World War I he fought on the Austro-Hungarian front in the 12th Uhlan Regiment with the rank of cornet; he was wounded several times and awarded the Cross of St. George.

After the 1917 revolution he returned to Georgia with the rank of staff-rotmistr (staff captain of cavalry) and joined the People’s Guard. In January 1918 he led a partisan detachment based on an armoured train, which the Transcaucasian Commissariat had tasked with disarming trains of Russian soldiers returning from the front. Evgeni Afkhazava was killed in fighting near Shamkir station (now in Azerbaijan) on 10 January 1918.

The Prosopography of Georgia database of Ilia State University (where the surname is spelled “Abkhazava”) cites the newspaper Sakartvelo of 1920 as saying that he was the head of a partisan detachment with the rank of staff-rotmistr and died in January 1918. According to Georgian Wikipedia, a street in Tbilisi’s Samgori district, in the Lilo settlement, was named after him. We could not find the naming act in the Legislative Herald of Georgia (Matsne).
