History

Khelvachauri Municipality is a municipality of Adjara in southwest Georgia, closely connected to Batumi and stretching along the border with Turkey. Borderland heritage and cultural landmarks

The area is often described through its rugged landscape and a concentration of historical monuments—fortresses and arched bridges—reflecting the long-term importance of valleys and crossings in a border-region setting.

Ottoman rule, migrations, and the 19th century

In the second half of the 19th century, when the area was under Ottoman rule, Abkhazian Muhajirs settled in several villages of today’s municipality; their descendants still live in parts of Khelvachauri.

1878 and administrative formation up to today

After the Russian takeover of Adjara in 1878, the territory was incorporated into the Batum Oblast and later underwent multiple Soviet-era administrative restructurings. Since 2006, it has existed as Khelvachauri Municipality.
