Tengiz Chantladze Street (Georgian: თენგიზ ჩანტლაძის ქუჩა) is a street in Orkhevi, in the Samgori district of Tbilisi (administrative uban “Orkhevi, Airport”). According to OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, it starts in the south at the Kakheti Highway, runs north through the Orkhevi settlement, then turns east and continues through the Tetrikhevi settlements towards Didi Lilo.

According to OSM, the main line of the street is about 4.4 km long; all sections bearing the street’s name (including the slip roads at the Kakheti Highway) total about 4.7 km. Most of the street is mapped in OSM as a tertiary road, and its eastern end (about 1.5 km) as a residential street. The postcode is 0190. English Wikipedia lists it among the main streets of Orkhevi.

Location

The southern end of the street is at the Kakheti Highway interchange (about 41.6880° N, 44.9226° E). About 0.4 km from there the street crosses over the main carriageway of the Kakheti Highway (S5) on the Orkhevi Bridge (about 110 m) and heads north. Between about 0.7 and 1 km from the southern end, Merab Kostava, David Kakabadze, Aleksandre Tsutsunava, Ivane Gokieli and Giorgi Mukhadze streets join it, and at about 1.05 km Tengiz Chantladze Dead End.

At about 1.3 km Koba Abzianidze Street joins the street, at 1.35 km Soso Ghviniashvili Street, and at about 1.55 km Aleksandre Kartvelishvili Street and Tengiz Chantladze 1st Lane. Just after that, the street crosses the Lower Magistral Canal on a small bridge. It then meets Brothers Slovinski Street (about 1.8 km), Kakliani Street (about 2.05 km) and Samgori 1st Lane (about 2.2 km).

In its northern part the street turns east and at about 2.6 km crosses Tetri Khevi Street. East of there, Tengiz Chantladze 2nd Lane and the 3rd and 4th Dead Ends join it, and the last section, about 1.3 km long, runs almost straight east to its end at about 41.7020° N, 44.9541° E. The midpoint of the main line is at about 41.7041° N, 44.9295° E.

In OSM and Nominatim address data, the southern and middle parts of the street belong to the Orkhevi settlement, and the northern part to the Tetrikhevi and Tetrikhevhesi settlements; the whole street lies in the administrative uban “Orkhevi, Airport”. A 2018 decision of the Tbilisi City Council describes the street’s extension as located in Didi Lilo. The nearest metro station, Varketili, is about 4.3 km from the southern end of the street in a straight line.

Name and history

According to English Wikipedia (citing the 2003 publication “Geography of Georgia, Part II”), until 2001 the street was named after Elene Akhvlediani; OSM also records “Akhvlediani Street” as its old name. Decisions of the Tbilisi City Council (Sakrebulo) document later changes:

• 16 January 2018 (Order No. 7) — Tengiz Chantladze Street was extended in Didi Lilo, and the unnamed dead ends next to it were named Tengiz Chantladze 2nd, 3rd and 4th Dead Ends.

• 29 March 2019 (Order No. 91) — an unnamed lane next to the street was named Tengiz Chantladze 2nd Lane.

• 21 November 2023 (Order No. 583) — a section of Tengiz Chantladze Street was given the name of Koba Abzianidze, a fighter who died in the war in Abkhazia.

No official document stating whom the street honours could be found, so its namesake is not confirmed. Georgian Wikipedia has an article on an actor of the same name, Tengiz Chantladze (1933–1988), People’s Artist of the Georgian SSR (1982), who founded a theatre of miniatures in 1962; in 1990 the Tbilisi State Theatre of Satire and Humour was named after him. However, no source linking him to the street could be found.
