Tianeti Municipality — overview

History

Tianeti Municipality lies in the east of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region, in the upper valley of the Iori River, with the townlet of Tianeti as its administrative centre, at about 1,100 m above sea level. The municipality covers about 906 km² of high valleys, forested slopes and mountain pastures between the Kartli and Kakheti ranges. The Iori rises in the mountains north-east of Tianeti and flows through the town. Tianeti borders Mtskheta to the south, Dusheti to the north-west and Akhmeta to the east.

Together with the neighbouring Ertso area, the valley forms the historic land of Ertso-Tianeti. According to tradition it was Christianised around 330, and in the Middle Ages it belonged in turn to different Georgian states; in the 15th century it was a district of the Kingdom of Kakheti. In 1614 the Persian invasion largely depopulated the area, which was later resettled by highlanders from Pshavi and Khevsureti — a heritage still felt in local traditions. Under the Russian Empire, Tianeti was the centre of the Tianeti district of Tiflis Governorate.

The municipality preserves medieval fortresses and churches. Among them is the Bochorma fortress, mentioned by the 10th century, as well as the ruins of the Ertso fortress and old churches in the valley villages. The cool mountain climate — winters here can be very cold — and the forests of the upper Iori make the area a natural summer retreat.

In the south of the municipality lies the townlet of Sioni, founded in 1951 together with the Sioni Reservoir on the Iori, at about 1,000 m. The reservoir and the surrounding meadows are popular for fishing, picnics and quiet country holidays.

For travellers, Tianeti is a peaceful highland escape within easy reach of Tbilisi: drive along the Iori valley, visit Bochorma and village churches, stop at the Sioni Reservoir and enjoy the fresh mountain air, local dairy products and traditional Pshavian-style hospitality.
