Overview

Ksani Street (Georgian: ქსნის ქუჩა, also written ქსანის ქუჩა) is a street in the Nadzaladevi district of Tbilisi, in Sanzona, in the Ghrmaghele area. It starts in the east at David Guramishvili Avenue, runs west and crosses to the western side on a bridge over the railway, where it connects to Evelina Tavadze Street and Nona Gaprindashvili Street.

According to OpenStreetMap (OSM) data, the two-way main section of the street is about 610 m long; including the one-way sections west of the bridge, the roads bearing the street’s name total about 1.1 km. In OSM the street is mapped as a primary road, with four lanes on the main section. Ghrmaghele metro station is next to its eastern end.

Location

According to OSM, the eastern end of the street is on David Guramishvili Avenue (about 41.7664° N, 44.7906° E). From there the street runs north-west; on the way Ksani Dead End branches off it. The main section ends with a bridge over the railway line (the western end of the bridge is at about 41.7692° N, 44.7842° E). The midpoint of the street is at about 41.7679° N, 44.7874° E.

West of the bridge the street divides: a short section (about 50 m) joins Evelina Tavadze Street to the north, while one-way sections and a slip road (about 460 m in total) lead south-west to the junction of Nona Gaprindashvili and Evelina Tavadze streets. In OSM the Khevdzmari stream passes under the street in a culvert.

In OSM address data the street’s area belongs to the Nadzaladevi district, Sanzona (Ghrmaghele; near the western end — the Peikrebi settlement). The nearest metro station is Ghrmaghele — about 170 m from the eastern end of the street in a straight line.

Name

The street’s name matches that of the Ksani river. No official document stating the reason for or date of the naming could be found. In Georgian, “Ksani” takes the genitive form “Ksnis” (as in “Ksnis Kheoba”, the Ksani Gorge), so the street appears both as ქსნის ქუჩა and as ქსანის ქუჩა (the form used in OSM). In national romanisation the river’s name is written Ksani.

The Ksani is a river in Georgia and a left tributary of the Mtkvari (Kura). It is 84 km long and has a drainage basin of 885 km². It rises on the Keli volcanic plateau, from Lake Keli, at 2,914 m above sea level, and flows through the Akhalgori (occupied territory under the Law of Georgia on Occupied Territories), Kaspi and Mtskheta municipalities. Its average annual discharge at the mouth is 15 m³/s, and its water is used for irrigation.
