About Taboris Mta 1st Dead End

Overview

Taboris Mta 1st Dead End (Georgian: თაბორის მთის I ჩიხი, “1st dead end of Mount Tabori”) is a cul-de-sac in the Krtsanisi district of Tbilisi, in the Ortachala area. A dead end (chikhi) is a street that joins another street at one end only. This one branches off Taboris Mta Street and, according to OpenStreetMap (OSM), is about 280 m long.

The name is new: Tbilisi City Council gave it on 19 December 2025 (decision No. 137). Under that decision, the name Taboris Mta 1st Dead End went to an unnamed dead end next to Suliko Tortladze Street. The same decision extended Taboris Mta Street over a section of Nadikvari 3rd Street, an unnamed street next to it and Suliko Tortladze Street.

Location

According to OSM, the dead end joins Taboris Mta Street at its eastern end (about 41.6803° N, 44.8187° E). From there it runs west and ends at about 41.6798° N, 44.8155° E. OSM maps it as a residential street about 281 m long. In OSM it does not cross any other named street. The approximate midpoint is at 41.6801° N, 44.8171° E. OSM’s address data places it in the Ortachala area of the Krtsanisi district.

Based on OSM coordinates, the nearest metro station is 300 Aragveli, about 1.2 km away in a straight line. Avlabari is about 1.4 km away.

Taboris Mta Street

The dead end takes its name from Taboris Mta Street, which was named in several stages:

  • 25 July 2017 (decision No. 277) — an unnamed street linking Krtsanisi and Shindisi, in the Mtatsminda and Krtsanisi districts, was named Taboris Mta.

  • 10 July 2018 (decision No. 207) — an unnamed lane next to Taboris Mta Street was named Taboris Mta 1st Lane. This lane is a different street from the 1st Dead End.

  • 19 December 2025 (decision No. 137) — Taboris Mta Street was extended over a section of Nadikvari 3rd Street, a neighbouring unnamed street and Suliko Tortladze Street. The dead end next to Suliko Tortladze Street became Taboris Mta 1st Dead End.

The name: Tabori

The decisions do not explain the choice of name. In Tbilisi, Tabori is the name of a ridge, a medieval fortress and a monastery.

According to Georgian Wikipedia (citing the encyclopedia Sakartvelo, vol. 3, 2014), the Tabori ridge lies south of Tbilisi. It is a south-eastern branch of the Trialeti range and the watershed between the Tsavkisistskali (Leghvtakhevi) and Krtsanisiskhevi streams. Its crest rises gradually from east (600 m) to west (1,000 m). On the crest stands the Monastery of the Transfiguration, built in 1995–2001.

Tabori fortress (also called Qorchi-Qala) was a medieval fortress at the north-western end of the ridge, above the Botanical Garden. Only the ruins of its foundations survive. According to Wikipedia, the name is linked to Mount Tabor, regarded in Christian tradition as the place of the Transfiguration. The fortress is first mentioned in the chronicle Matiane Kartlisa, in connection with events of 1045.

Ortachala

According to Georgian Wikipedia, Ortachala is one of the districts of old Tbilisi, in the south-east of the city (Krtsanisi district). The name combines Turkish orta (“middle”) and Georgian chala (“riverside meadow”), i.e. “middle meadow”. It was first the name of an island formed where the Mtkvari split into two branches.

Nearby places

  • Tabori Church of the Transfiguration — about 0.7 km in a straight line from the middle of the dead end (OSM).

  • Taboris Mta Street — the street the dead end branches off; according to OSM it runs from Ortachala towards Shindisi.
